Know Before the Flow: Where’s Your Water Main Shut-Off?

Plumbing emergencies don’t wait for business hours. Whether it’s a burst pipe, overflowing toilet, or a leaking water heater, knowing how to quickly shut off your water can mean the difference between a minor mess and major damage.

So here’s the big question: Do you know where your water main shut-off is?

Two Common Shut-Off Locations

  1. Inside the Garage or Utility Room
In many newer homes, the main water shut-off valve is conveniently located inside—usually in the garage, utility room, or near your water heater. This valve is often a lever-style handle that you turn 90 degrees to stop the water flow. It’s fast, accessible, and easy to operate in a pinch.
  2. Outside at the Water Meter
If you can’t find a valve inside, your next stop is the water meter. This is typically located near the street in a concrete or metal box. Inside that box, you’ll find a shut-off valve (often requiring a water key or wrench to operate). It’s a little less convenient but still crucial in an emergency.
